Intro
Last night, I read three poems at a queer open mic. This was the first time I’ve read my poems at an event since coming out as a trans woman. It’s the first time I’ve read in public in a very long time. When I finished grad school in 2016, I was pretty burnt out and lost, and I gave up on writing or reading poems for a long time. This was my first public reading since then.
I started reading other people’s poems again about four years ago and got back to writing my own about three years ago. Since coming out in October 2023, I’ve been writing pretty consistently. Being myself in real life has freed me to express my art in an honest and vulnerable way, and I hope that comes through in these poems.
The poems I read last night were “1948 Chevrolet,” “Christmas 2024,” and “Don’t Remember Me for My Resilience.” My friend Eme was kind enough to take video for me, so I can share them here.
